Full Review: Circadian Optics Lumine Light Therapy Lamp

Circadian Optics Lumine Light Therapy Lamp

Recommended by doctors, light therapy is a healthy way to fight seasonal affective disorder, depression, lethargy, and other symptoms. It’s more affordable than traditional approaches like medication. And the best part? It only takes up to 30 minutes per day to get noticeable results.

Light therapy works by sitting in front of a specially made lamp that emits high intensity light. Our brain reacts to it in the same way it would when exposed to the sun. It improves our mood, focus, and overall health. Depending on the brightness of the lamp, it can even promote better sleep.

Normally these lamps are used when the fall begins and throughout the winter. But, they can be used whenever you like. Are you stuck in an office all day? Then you’ll benefit from having a light therapy lamp as you aren’t probably getting the amount of sun you need. There are many reasons why we might not get outside enough, but that can be solved with a few minutes per day.

That’s why we’re doing a review on the Circadian Optics Lumine light therapy lamp. It’s their best selling model and one of the best lamps for fending off seasonal depression. We’ll be covering everything from price to light quality and portability, so keep reading.

Box Contents

At first glance, the Circadian Optics Lumine arrives in a bright orange and white box with a picture of the lamp on the front. It’s made out of a sturdy cardboard that will keep it safe while it’s being shipped.

The box itself is about 7 inches high so when we opened it, the Lumine light therapy lamp was stored nice and snug. Along with the lamp, the package includes a power cord and user manual.

Light Intensity

The Circadian Optics Lumine offers 10,000 lux light intensity. This is considered clinical strength and the highest amount of light you’ll receive from a therapy lamp. For such a small and compact size, it packs a serious punch.

If you want a light therapy session, simply just turn the brightness down to one of it’s other settings. With three brightness options, you can get your ideal light therapy every time you turn it on. Sometimes you may want something less intense while you work or study. Other times, you may want to turn it up to 10,000 lux and feel like you’re outside on a hot sunny day.

LED vs Fluorescent Light Bulbs

When you buy a light therapy lamp, you want it to last. Circadian Optics has made this one of their biggest goals. As a result, the Lumine and other models have an incredible 50,000 hour lifespan. You won’t be replacing the bulbs for several years, saving you time and money.

Circadian Optics uses LED lights very specifically and for good reason. Firstly, LED is much safer than fluorescent bulbs. This is because fluorescent light bulbs contain mercury, which is highly dangerous if it becomes exposed. Secondly, LED lights don’t slowly fizzle out. If that were the case, your light therapy lamp would gradually lose power and wouldn’t give you the results you want over time. Instead, LED bulbs generate the exact same brightness until they require replacement.

Compared to traditional lighting options, LED also is very energy efficient. 80% to 90% of the electricity it uses is translated into light, with the remaining being heat. Other bulbs might produce as low as 20% light, which would make a light therapy lamp almost useless.

LED lights are free of toxic chemicals that are found in fluorescent bulbs and other types. They are 100% recyclable and will lower your carbon footprint if you care about the environment. Not only do you get so many health benefits, you get to help the planet, too.

One of the reasons that the light quality is so high from the Lumine is because LED bulbs emit practically no UV rays. We’ll touch upon this more in the next section. As well, LED stays strong in hot or cold weather, so your lamp will make you feel great all year around

Light Quality

Are you concerned about UV rays or other harmful effects of light therapy? Don’t worry, it’s a normal thing to consider when using a product like this. You’ll be happy to know that the Circadian Optics Lumine model blocks out up to 99.99% of ultraviolet light. This means you can get all of the health benefits of the sun without worrying about burning or skin problems.

Portability, Size and Design

Weighing in at 1 lbs, the Lumine therapy lamp is very lightweight and portable. It’s dimensions are the following:

  • 6.7” height
  • 3.9” length
  • 6.3” width

For a 10,000 lux lamp, it’s easily the most compact in its category. If you need to repackage it for travelling for example, it stores easily and the box is small in size, as well.

The design of the Lumine model is modern and minimal. It has a square share that contrasts against the normal rounded shape of other therapy lamps. It’s edges are also outlined in a smooth black ABS plastic.

The back has a foldable stand if you want to enjoy a therapy lamp session on your desk while you work or as you sit back and relax. There is also a wall mount to place it anywhere you like.
Overall, it is much smaller than other 10,000 lux therapy lamps which is great because it doesn’t take up space. You can fit it easily in your home, office, or around your home.

Full Spectrum

The Lumine model features 550k full spectrum lighting. It is one of the only lamps that you can buy that emits a wide range of light spectrums. With a larger range of lighting, you get an experience that looks and feels very similar to the sun. This is why our brain reacts to it by producing feel-good chemicals and alertness. Some therapy lamps don’t offer full spectrum lighting and it doesn’t result in the same benefits.

Cost

At less than $40, this lamp is very easy on the pocket and makes a great introductory light therapy lamp. Some 10,000 lux models like the Verilux HappyLight are closer to $100 for the same amount of power. If you’re new to light therapy and don’t want to spend too much at first, we highly recommend buying the Circadian Optics Lumine.

Overview

Circadian Optics Lumine therapy lamp is a bargain. For its price, it is a great light therapy lamp for beginners or anyone looking to save money. While it’s effective and has many perks, we gave it a 4 star rating because it doesn’t have some of the features that other models do.

But, the Lumine has many wonderful features. It emits up to 10,000 lux which gives you the full light therapy experience. This amount of light is on par with natural sunlight and will stimulate the brain to release feel-good chemicals. You will feel more focused, less lethargic, and more happy throughout the day.

Lots of light is good, but quality is even more important. Circadian Optics made sure to filter out 99.99% of the ultraviolet rays so you don’t have to worry about any health issues as a result of light therapy. As well, the Lumine uses full spectrum white light to give you as many benefits as possible. You can also choose between three settings of brightness.

The lamp uses LED bulbs that have a lifespan of 50,000 hours. This lamp could easily last you close to a decade with consistent use. LED lights don’t fade, are eco-friendly, and are more efficient than other types of bulbs like fluorescent.

When it comes to size, it stands at almost 7 inches tall and only weighs a single pound. You’ll have no trouble finding a spot for this on your desk or around the house. It has a suave appearance with a white body, black edges, and red power button. The folding stand and wall mount also give you plenty of options for placement.

Ensure that you use your light therapy lamp with caution. It’s a powerful device that will improve your mood and health, but you still have to be careful. If you have skin conditions that make you sensitive to light, take medication, or have eye conditions, consult a doctor before using one.
